Frank Burgers – Blue
November 6th – December 2nd
———————————————
I’ve always been interested in structure in a painting and the collisions between fields of colour. I try to find a balance between the amount of colour and intensity of colour, and at the dividing lines where these colours meet. In the current work I have stripped away figurative narrative and focussed on these abstract elements to construct an image.
As the series evolved I sought to use the raw, unpainted linen surfaces as independent and interrelated structural form contrasting against areas of paint and colour. This evolved into a series of larger paintings and the pastel studies in this exhibition.
Originally the pastels were a response to a requirement to make postcard sized images for an exhibition that was sent to the USA. I enjoyed the format and adapted the simplifications I was exploring in the paintings to develop these studies. I was looking at Richard Dienkorn at the time and some of these studies pay homage to his work. Other artists I thought about were Rothko, Aida Tomescu, Colour Field and Minimalism.
The emphasis on ‘Blue’ is because around this time I began exploring the variety of pure pigment blues available in Langridge and Art Spectrum oil paints. Blues became the staring points, composition and structure led to the ‘stacking’ of blocks of colour. This allowed further experimentation with other colour s and tones that worked with the blues…
